Ardıllık Sonrası, Barry ve Yazarlar Grevi Sırasında, HBO Zor Bir Zaman İçinde

Last week brought the series finales of two of HBO’s best modern day series, Succession and Barry, which probably should not have gone the kesin same weekend, but whatever. Tonight, we start The Idol, the horrifically reviewed, allegedly misogynistic series from musical artist The Weeknd and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. Just not sure a 25% rated series is going to be the must-see experience on Sunday nights that Succession was.

HBO and HBO Max have now been rolled up into WB Discovery’s new “Max,” not just obliterating the HBO name, but HBO itself is about to really go through something. Partially because of two of its big shows ending, partially because the Writers Strike means there is about to be a yawning content gap.

Let’s go through the status of HBO’s biggest series:

• Succession – Over
• Barry – Over
• The Idol – Bad
• Euphoria season 3 – Delayed to 2025
• The Last of Us season 2 – Delayed to 2025
• The White Lotus season 3 – Allegedly 2024
• House of the Dragon – Allegedly 2024
• Perry Mason – Season 2 just ended, renewal unclear
• The Righteous Gemstones season 3 – A bit of good news, about to debut in two weeks
• True Detective: Night Country – Allegedly 2023
• All other Game of Thrones spin-offs – No dates, not clear which ones will actually be made

And these are just the current, publicly available schedules. I am not convinced that some of these shows will not have further delays. While scripts were written for something like House of the Dragon before the Writers Strike shut everything down, many series are ending up going on pause anyway, either with other crew/directors being in solidarity with the writers, or the fact that you often have to rewrite things while filming. So I’m not sure proposed dates for shows like House of the Dragon and The White Lotus are accurate.

The rest of 2023 is The Idol, a rare total miss from HBO, it looks like, Righteous Gemstones (great, but niche), and True Detective, a show with 1.5 good seasons out of three so far. But that doesn’t even have a premiere date yet halfway through the year, and I wonder if it might be pushed.

HBO does not seem like they have all that many mega cultural hits on deck right now. They will never recapture Game of Thrones, and that makes their best series probably Last of Us and White Lotus. Perhaps another classic will emerge as a surprise like Succession did, but it’s going to be a weird couple of years.
